Setting up a comfortable home workstation

Thanks to the pandemic hybrid working is here to stay, and we’re all working from home now more than ever – so a comfortable home workstation is extremely important. ‘Working from home’ used to mean propping your laptop up on the kitchen table or making do with the furniture in your bedroom or living room.

But several lower back issues later (thank you slipped disc) I’ve learned that there are many benefits to be had from investing in a comfortable workstation, creating the office environment that you need.

I’ve worked from home for years, and recently upgraded my space so I thought I’d share a few recommendations for setting up a productive workstation.

  1. A height adjustable desk

So there are two options here depending on the space you have to work with and amount you’re willing to spend. The first is to get a height adjustable standing desk. Sitting for long periods of time can be harmful for your health. Adjusting your desk will not only let you move it to a height that allows good posture, you can also work for some time standing up – it really makes a world of difference to your back health!

If you are already working from a fixed table or desk, another option is a portable standing desk such as the Harmoni. The adjustable shelves allow for flexible working, and it can easily be put away at the end of the day.

2. Ergonomic computer accessories

This includes an external monitor, keypad and mouse.

These accessories are so important for bringing your out of that awful hunched position that comes with crouching around a laptop. Plus having a large screen / multiple screens makes flipping between tabs SO much easier. A bright display and clear screen are important when choosing an external monitor.

3. An ergonomic desk chair

I’m sorry to break it to you, but the dining table chair ain’t cutting it.

We tend to underestimate the importance of having a chair that gives proper posture support until we get back pain! And if you’ve ever experienced back pain you will know the crippling effect it can have on your general wellbeing. The right chair will not only prevent this, but help you to get more done comfortably.

This has been proven in an ergonomics study  that found that employees who were given an ergonomic chair had less negative symptoms during the day and an increase in productivity of 17.7%. Make sure to look for a desk chair with a variety of tilt options and lumbar height adjustments.

Other nice-to-have accessories for your space:

  • Extra long charging cable
  • Multiple USB port plug
  • Mood boosting plants (succulents are a great start)
  • A yoga mat to get a quick stretch session in before, during and after the working day
  • Speakers to play the right productivity music

You won’t regret these investments in your environment – they pay for themselves in health, happiness, and productivity. Do you own any of the above? What helps to make your workstation comfortable at home? Let me know in the comments!
